Here are a number of questions our guests have about singing with Capital Accord:
In addition to weekly rehearsals throughout the year, we put on a benefit concert in the spring, and participate in a Sweet Adelines regional competition in March or April each year. We have an annual weekend retreat in the winter to focus on preparing for competition. We also perform in and around our area several times per year for local festivals, business events, charitable events, as well as participating in Christmas and arts festival events.
Sweet Adelines is a great value when compared to many other hobbies. There are costs involved for membership (dues) as well as some related costume, educational, and travel expenses. As you go through the membership process, we can discuss these costs in more detail.
As you visit our rehearsals with the intention of membership, our Director will work with you on voice placement, and our Music Coordinator will work with you on an audition song. Prospective members generally audition within 4-8 rehearsals. The audition is done in a quartet, for our five-person music team, who will determine if you have passed your audition. Membership applications are voted on by the chorus.
Women of all vocal skills and experience levels are welcome at Capital Accord, and education is a major part of our experience. Experienced solo singers often find they have as much to learn about the barbershop style as complete newcomers! And really, isn't learning something new the fun part?
We use both sheet music and audio learning tracks to help our performers learn the repertoire. In addition, your section leader is available to help, and weekly rehearsals focus on unit sound and good vocal production.
